Holidays in Alta Pusteria

Holidays in Alta Pusteria

The holiday region Alta Pusteria (Hochpustertal) is the eastern most holiday area in South Tyrol and comprises the holiday resorts Braies, Villa Bassa, Dobbiaco, San Candido and Sesto.

Geographically running in east-west-direction the Pusteria valley reaches its highest point at the saddle of Dobbiaco with 1.220 m.
Shortly after this hardly noticeable elevation the valley falls again gradually and gently to San Candido (1.173 m).
Nevertheless the Dobbiaco field is an important watershed and an important geographical boundary. The water of the Rienza river flows to the west and reaches the Mediterranean. In the east of the Dobbiaco saddle springs the Drava river that flows into the Danube and then into the Black Sea.

Geologically Alta Pusteria forms a separating line between the prehistoric rock of the Alps and the light lime in the south, it therefore shows a very particular diversity of the landscape.

Alta Pusteria has green spruce forests and luscious pastures.
The summers are warm but not hot, apart from a few exceptional days in high summer.
The winters are very cold, also in the low parts of the valley, the field of Dobbiaco is the cold pole of South Tyrol and the skiing areas in Alta Pusteria always have a lot of snow.

The 7 ski resorts of this holiday area allow a wonderful skiing holiday in South Tyrol, amongst these is the largest skiing area of Alta Pusteria, the Monte Elme ski region of Sesto/San Candido (1.130 m – 2.200 m), moreover the ski resort Monte Baranci of San Candido (1.175 m -1.610 m) and the skiing resort Croda Rossa at Moso/Sesto (1.355 m – 2.000 m). The smaller ski areas in Dobbiaco, Braies etc. are especially designed for beginners to learn to ski on easy beginner slopes and more difficult red slopes.

Alta Pusteria is also famous for its vast cross country ski runs of over 200 km for beginners and experts that for example lead to the beautiful Val Fiscalina valley or around the Braies lake.

In the summer the holiday region offers great hiking possibilities for the whole family in the spectacular natural and cultural landscape of the two nature parks Dolomiti di Sesto (of Dobbiaco, Sesto and San Candido) and Fanes-Sennes-Braies.

Expert mountaineers are enchanted by the world famous three pinnacles (Tre Cime), the highest being 2.999 m high, the Croda dei Toni (3.094 m), the Croda Rossa (2.936 m) and the Cima dei Tre Scarperi (3.152 m). Of course Alta Pusteria is also a first class area for cycle and mountain bike tours. A very popular and easy bike route goes from San Candido to Brunico or over to Lienz in East Tyrol.

The many international events and sporting contests, the cross country stadium in Dobbiaco and the cross country ski runs for professionals show the sporting diversity in this vacation area.

Alta Pusteria has always been an important transitory region between the west and east. Here one of the most important Roman streets that used to go through the Pusteria valley over 2000 years ago met the ”Strada d’Alemagna”, the trade route of the Middle Ages, on which wood and spices were transported from Venice and on which German Crusaders came through the Pusteria valley.
Enjoy your vacation in the holiday region Alta Pusteria, the land with the three pinnacles (Tre Cime)!
