Holidays in Monguelfo in Val Pusteria
MonguelfoThe friendly village Monguelfo (Welsberg) lies at a height of 1.087 m above sea level and is situated at the foothills of the mountain Eggerberg, a mountain crest from which you have an excellent view onto the Dolomites. At Monguelfo the Casies valley goes into the Pusteria valley from the north and the Valle di Braies valley from the south. Castle Monguelfo is enthroned on a hill, the legend says it was connected to the castle ruin San Martino on the opposite side through a chain bridge. Today the castle is an important convention and culture centre. Monguelfo is the home of two famous South Tyrolean painters, the Baroque artist Paul Troger and the painter of the late Middle Ages Simon von Taisten. Precious frescos of Simon von Taisten can be looked at in the church San Giorgio. The Baroque parish church St. Margareth has three altar pictures from Paul Troger, a famous artist that after years of apprenticeship in Bologna and Venice, mainly worked in the Danube area. |
