The famous tourist resort Solda (Sulden) that lies at a height of 1.870 m above sea level and has many hotels, is situated in the Val di Solda valley. In summer Solda has a beautiful view onto the Ortles, with its 3.905 m it is the highest mountain in the German speaking area and starting point for many partly very hard mountain tours. In winter modern lifts and the worlds biggest cable car takes skiers up to below the Ortles-Cevedale Group, here snow can be assured on the slopes until May. The world famous mountaineer Reinhold Messner brought Tibetan Yaks to Solda. In addition he established a museum on the Alpine theme, an external museum part of the Messner Mountain Museum with its new main museum in the Castle Firmiano. The central theme of the 300 m2 large underground exhibition is the ice and the Ortles.
The village Trafoi (1.543 m a.s.l.) is the home of the skiing legend Gustav Thöni and is situated at the street leading to the Stelvio pass. To the south of the small village we find the popular pilgrimage place Three Holy Wells (Heilig Drei Brunnen) that was probably already a holy well in pre-Christian times. The small Loreto chapel is from the year 1645, whereas the neighbouring pilgrimage church was only built about 150 years later. In Trafoi you can also visit the National Park House “Naturatrafoi“. The permanent exhibition gives information on the extreme living conditions of the flora and fauna in this high Alpine habitat, it also gives an overview on the geological rock stratums of the Ortles Massif.
