Holidays in Fiè allo Sciliar
Fiè allo SciliarThe holiday resort Fiè allo Sciliar (Völs am Schlern) is situated at a height of 880 m above sea level and extends itself in a sunny location at the foot of the prominent Sciliar massif. This holiday village with its idyllic hamlets especially made a name for itself because of its long haybath tradition. The picturesque village centre of Fiè forms a very harmonious unity with the village square and the small lanes. The art treasures of the baroque parish church are composed of a Romanesque crucifix and a late-Gothic wing altar. The Michael chapel close by has a small parish museum with sacral art treasures of the surrounding churches. Fiè is historically famous as the location of the first witch trial in Tyrol (in the year 1510) that was litigated against nine respectable peasant women of the surroundings. The driving force of these witch trials of the past was the Tyrolean governor of the time, Leonhard of Fiè. The peasants did not forget his important role in the witch trials, during a peasant uprising they raided the castle Prösels that belonged to him. The mighty castle Prösels goes back to an earlier construction and was reconstructed in Renaissance style. Later the castle decayed and was only restored a few years ago. Today castle Prösels is a modern cultural centre and a worthy venue for concerts and exhibitions. |
